Pinpoint Test L: The Transmission Temperature Gauge Is Inoperative

Normal Operation

The Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) receives the transmission temperature data from the PCM (gasoline engines) or Transmission Control Module (TCM) (diesel engine) over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) communication bus. When the IPC receives the transmission temperature data, the IPC commands the transmission temperature gauge with a corresponding movement of the pointer. The PCM or TCM filters the transmission temperature input and sends the filtered data to the IPC. The IPC then further dampens the temperature data to eliminate minor fluctuations in the gauge indication.

If the transmission temperature data is missing or invalid from the PCM or TCM for 5 seconds or less, the IPC defaults the transmission temperature gauge to the last setting, based upon the last known good message received. If the IPC does not receive the transmission temperature data from the PCM or TCM for more than 5 seconds, the IPC sets DTC U0101:00 in continuous memory and defaults the transmission temperature gauge to the cold (C) stop position. If the transmission temperature data is deemed invalid by the IPC for more than 5 seconds, the IPC sets DTC U0402:00 and defaults the transmission temperature gauge to the cold (C) stop position.

NOTE: If DTC U0101:00 sets in the IPC, other observable symptoms may be the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator always on.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- PCM (gasoline engines)
- TCM (diesel engine)
- IPC

PINPOINT TEST L: THE TRANSMISSION TEMPERATURE GAUGE IS INOPERATIVE

-------------------------------------------------
L1 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE TCM OR PCM KOEO SELF-TEST

- Check the recorded TCM OR PCM DTCs from the self-test.
- Are any DTCs recorded?

Yes
REFER to Automatic Transaxle/Transmission - TorqShift(R) Testing and Inspection.

No
GO to L2.

-------------------------------------------------
L2 CARRY OUT THE TRANSMISSION TEMPERATURE GAUGE ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL

- Ignition ON.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IPC DataLogger.
- Select the IPC transmission temperature gauge (TRANS_TEMP) active command. Command the transmission temperature gauge on and off while monitoring the transmission temperature gauge.
- Does the transmission temperature gauge move to hot (H) and return to cold (C)?

Yes
GO to L3.

No
INSTALL a new IPC. REFER to Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). TEST the system for normal operation.

-------------------------------------------------
L3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IPC SELF-TEST

- Check for recorded IPC DTCs from the self-test.
- Are any DTCs recorded?

Yes
For DTC U0101:00, GO to Pinpoint Test BB. For all other DTCs, REFER to DTC Charts. Pinpoint Tests BB: DTC U0101:00

No
INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to Electronic Engine Controls Service and Repair. TEST the system for normal operation. For diesel engine, INSTALL a new TCM. REFER to Transmission Service Components - Exploded View, External Components in Automatic Transaxle/Transmission - TorqShift(R)6. TEST the system for normal operation.
