Transmission Fluid Drain and Refill

Draining

NOTICE: Use transmission fluid specific for this transmission. Do not use any supplemental transmission fluid additives or cleaning agents. The use of these products can cause internal transmission components to fail, which will affect the operation of the transmission.

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Jacking and Lifting Service and Repair.

2. Remove the transmission fluid pan drain plug and allow the transmission fluid to drain.

Refill

All vehicles

1. Install the transmission fluid pan drain plug.
- Tighten to 18 Nm (159 lb-in).

Early build vehicles

2. NOTICE: The use of any transmission fluid other than specified may result in the transmission failing to operate in a normal manner or transmission failure.

Fill the transmission through the transmission fluid filler tube.

- If ONLY the transmission fluid drain plug or pan was removed, add 9.5 L (10.0 qt) of transmission fluid.

- If the main control was removed, add 11.4 L (12.0 qt) of transmission fluid.

- If the transmission was removed and disassembled, add 17.0 L (18.0 qt) of transmission fluid.

Late build vehicles

3. NOTICE: The use of any transmission fluid other than specified may result in the transmission failing to operate in a normal manner or transmission failure.

Fill the transmission through the transmission fluid filler tube.

- If ONLY the transmission fluid drain plug or pan was removed, add 7.8 L (8.2 qt) of transmission fluid.

- If the main control was removed, add 9.7 L (10.2 qt) of transmission fluid.

- If the transmission was removed and disassembled, add 15.3 L (16.2 qt) of transmission fluid.

All vehicles

4. Start the engine. Move the selector lever through all gear ranges while checking for engagements to allow the main control hydraulic circuits to fill with transmission fluid.

Early build vehicles

5. Using the scan tool with the engine running, check and make sure the transmission is at normal operating temperature 82-93°C (180-200°F). Check and adjust the transmission fluid level and check for any leaks. If transmission fluid is needed, add transmission fluid in increments of 0.24L (0.5 pt) until the correct level is achieved.
