Pinpoint Test P: The Stability/Traction Control Indicator Is Never/Always On

Normal Operation

The stability/traction control indicator flashes when the vehicle traction control or Roll Stability Control (RSC(R)) system is in active mode or is being controlled by the ABS module (RSC(R) (Roll Stability Control)) or the PCM (traction control). The Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) receives the stability/traction control signal from the ABS module (RSC(R) (Roll Stability Control)) or the PCM (traction control) through the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) communication bus. The IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) monitors the stability/traction control signal and, when the ABS module (RSC(R) (Roll Stability Control)) or the PCM (traction control) detects a concern, the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) illuminates the stability/traction control indicator.

If the stability/traction control message is missing for less than 5 seconds, the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) defaults the stability/traction control indicator to the last on/off state, based upon the last known good stability/traction control status message received.

If the stability/traction control message is missing for more than 5 seconds, the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) sets DTC U0100:00 (traction control) or U0121:00 (RSC(R) (Roll Stability Control)) in continuous memory and defaults the stability/traction control indicator on.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- Stability/traction control concern

- ABS module

- PCM

- IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster)

PINPOINT TEST P : THE STABILITY/TRACTION CONTROL INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON

P1 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) SELF-TEST

- Check for recorded DTCs from the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) self-test.

Are any DTCs recorded?

Yes
For DTC U0100:00, GO to Pinpoint Test AU. Pinpoint Test AU: DTC U0100:00

For DTC U0121:00, GO to Pinpoint Test AW. Pinpoint Test AW: DTC U0121:00

For all other DTCs, REFER to DTC Charts. Instrumentation, Message Center and Warning Chimes

No
If equipped with traction control, GO to P2.

If equipped with RSC(R) (Roll Stability Control), GO to P3.

P2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE PCM KOEO (Key ON Engine OFF) SELF-TEST

- Check for recorded DTCs from the PCM Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) self-test.

Are any DTCs recorded?

Yes
REFER to Computers and Control Systems Information.

No
GO to P4.

P3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE ABS MODULE SELF-TEST

- Check for recorded DTCs from the ABS module self-test.

Are any DTCs recorded?

Yes
REFER to Antilock Brakes / Traction Control Systems.

No
GO to P4.

P4 CARRY OUT THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) INDICATOR LAMP CONTROL ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL

- Ignition ON.

- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) DataLogger.

- Enter the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) active command mode and select the stability/traction control indicator (TC/IVD/RSC_LMP) active command. Command the stability/traction control active indicator on and off while observing the stability/traction control indicator.

Does the stability/traction control indicator illuminate when commanded on and turn off when commanded off?

Yes
If equipped with traction control, INSTALL a new PCM. TEST the system for normal operation.

If equipped with RSC(R) (Roll Stability Control), INSTALL a new ABS module. TEST the system for normal operation.

No
INSTALL a new IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster). REFER to Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) . TEST the system for normal operation.
