Pinpoint Test Z: The Charging System Message Center Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On
Instrumentation, Message Center and Warning Chimes
Pinpoint Test Z: The Charging System Message Center Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On
Normal Operation
The charging system indicator is controlled by the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) based upon data received from the Body Control Module (BCM) over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN). The BCM (Body Control Module) receives the charging system status from the PCM over the HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network). When a fault is detected in the charging system, the BCM (Body Control Module) sends the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) a request to illuminate the charging system warning indicator.
If the charging system warning indicator request message is missing for less than 5 seconds, the charging system indicator remains in the last state (on or off). If the charging system message is missing for more than 5 seconds, the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) sets DTC U0140:00 in continuous memory and defaults the charging system indicator on.
NOTE: If DTC U0140:00 sets in the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster), other observable symptoms may be an inoperative key-in-ignition chime, door ajar message center indicator or RH/LH turn indicators.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Message center concern
- Charging system concern
- PCM
PINPOINT TEST Z : THE CHARGING SYSTEM MESSAGE CENTER WARNING INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON
Z1 VERIFY THE OPERATION OF THE DOOR AJAR MESSAGE CENTER WARNING INDICATOR
- Close all doors then open the LH front door.
- Ignition ON.
- NOTE: If multiple warnings are present, the message center cycles through each of the warning indicators. Allow the displays to cycle through each display while determining whether the door ajar message center warning indicator is active.
Observe the message center.
Is the door ajar message center warning indicator active?
Yes
GO to Z2.
No
GO to Pinpoint Test AF. Pinpoint Test AF: The Message Center Is Not Operating Correctly
Z2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE PCM KOEO (Key ON Engine OFF) SELF-TEST
- Check the recorded PCM DTCs from the Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) self-test.
Are any charging system DTCs recorded?
Yes
REFER to Computers and Control Systems. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
GO to Z3.
Z3 CHECK THE CHARGING SYSTEM OPERATION
- Check the charging system operation.
Does the charging system operate correctly?
Yes
GO to Z4.
No
REFER to Charging System.
Z4 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) DTCs from the self-test.
Is DTC U0140:00 recorded?
Yes
GO to Pinpoint Test AY. Pinpoint Test AY: DTC U0140:00
No
If the charging system warning indicator is never on with the KOEO (Key ON Engine OFF), the system is operating correctly at this time.
If the charging system warning indicator is always on, INSTALL a new PCM. TEST the system for normal operation.
