With Transmission Built Before Feb.9,1987






NOTE: Starting February 9, 1987 (Julian date 040) all 1987 model transmissions (production and service replacement transmission assemblies) are built with a hew reverse input housing and drum assembly. Also note the the component parts of the reverse and input housing and drum assembly shown in image cannot be used wit arts from transmissions built prior to February 9, 1987.





1. Remove retaining ring from reverse input housing, then the backing plate.

2. Remove clutch plates and waved steel plate.





3. Install clutch spring compressor tool No. J-33327 or J-23327 and clutch spring Compressor adapter tool No. J-25018, then compress spring assembly.

4. Remove spring assembly retainer ring and spring assembly.

5. Remove reverse input clutch piston, then the inner and outer lip seals from piston.

6. Inspect backing plate for damage, distortion, burrs and surface finish damage.

7. Inspect clutch plates for tang damage, delamination, wear and heat damage.

8. Inspect spring assembly for distortion or damage.

9. Inspect piston for loose retaining rings and dishing or deforming.

10. Inspect housing and drum assembly for damaged or worn bushings, leaking welds, damaged hub and outer housing surfaces and free moving retainer and ball assembly.

11. Install inner and outer seals on the piston. Seal lips should face away from hub.

12. Install piston on housing and drum assembly, using an 8 mm feeler gauge to position the lip seals.

13. Install spring assembly. Ensure large opening in assembly faces piston.






14. Install tool No. J-23327 and J-25018, then compress spring assembly and install retainer ring.

15. Install waved steel clutch plate.





16. Install clutch plates. Refer to Figure for correct number plates. Start with composition plate and alternate with steel.

17. Install backing plate with chamfered side up, then the retaining ring.
