Steering Column (Tilt) - Noise or Squeaks

SUBJECT: TILT STEERING COLUMN NOISE OR SOUEAKS
MODELS: ALL MODELS WITH TILT STEERING COLUMNS
Some vehicles equipped with tilt steering columns experience a squeaking noise when turning the steering wheel in a tilted position. This can be caused by insufficient grease in the tilting mechanism.
Figure 1 - TILT STEERING ASSEMBLY:
TO CHECK FOR THIS CONDITION:
1. Start engine.
2. Position steering wheel in the full up position, Figure No. 1
3. Touching only the rim (so the center pad does not cause a squeak) turn the steering wheel back and forth to the extreme left and right position.
4. Repeat this procedure at straight on position and full down position.
If a squeaking noise is detected, follow the repair procedure listed in this bulletin.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Tilt steering wheel to full up position.
2. Spray-lube GM-1052349 lubriplate lubricant grease (or equivalent) into the opening as shown in Figure No. 2, alongside the tilt lever, aiming at the universal joint. Turn steering wheel one full turn while applying grease.
3. Hold tilt release lever in moveable position and move steering wheel from full up to full down position 4 to 8 times.
4. If squeak persists, repeat step 2.
