Removal and Replacement
1. Disconnect battery ground cable and remove air cleaner, then raise and support vehicle.2 Drain transmission fluid, then disconnect shift linkage and propeller shaft(s).
3. Disconnect support bracket at catalytic converter together with any other components necessary to gain sufficient clearance.
4. Using suitable jack(s), support transmission and, if used, the transfer case.
5. Remove transmission crossmember. Do not stretch or damage any cables, wires or other components when lowering transmission.
6. Lower transmission sufficiently to obtain clearance to other components.
7. Remove dipstick tube and seal, covering opening in transmission.
8. Disconnect speedometer cable, if necessary, vacuum modulator line, transmission electrical connectors and the cooler lines. Cap all openings in transmission and the cooler lines.
9. Disconnect transfer case shifter, if used, and position out of way.
10. Remove dampener and support, if equipped.
11. Remove transmission support braces, noting location for installation.
12. Remove converter housing cover and mark relationship between flywheel and torque converter.
13. Remove flywheel attaching bolts.
14. Support engine with suitable jack and remove transmission attaching bolts, noting location of any brackets or clips.
15. Slide transmission straight back off locating pins and install converter holding strap J 21366 or equivalent, then lower transmission from vehicle.
16. Reverse procedure to install.
