Speedo Drive Gear & Speed Sensor

Replacement
Some models do not have a speedometer drive gear and some models do not have a speed sensor rotor. Some early models have a factory installed nylon speedometer drive gear. All service replacement speedometer drive gears are steel.

1. When removing and installing nylon drive gear, proceed as follows:

a. Depress clip and slide gear off output shaft.

b. Place clip, with square end toward flange of shaft, into hole in output shaft and align slot in drive gear with clip and install gear. When replacing gear, discard retaining clip and install steel gear as described in step 2.

2. When replacing steel speedometer drive gear, proceed as follows. Do not remove speed sensor rotor, if equipped, unless damaged. After removal, a new rotor must be installed to insure press fit to output shaft

a. Install tools J-21427-01 and J-8433, or equivalents, depress clip on 1987-88 models and remove gear and/or rotor.

b. Install rotor using tool J-36352-3 or equivalent.

c. Using suitable tool, install speedometer drive gear. On 1980-86 models install gear so that it is 5 21/32 inch below end of output shaft On 1987-88 models, install gear so that clip can be installed.
