Engine Removal


Front Engine Mounting Components:




Rear Engine Mounting Components:





Remove or Disconnect

1. Disconnect negative battery cable.

2. Drain the cooling system.

3. Remove coolant reservoir bottle.

4. Remove grille and lower grille valance.

5. Remove upper radiator support.

WARNING: High pressure refrigerant. Recover refrigerant properly.

6. Remove air conditioning condenser.

7. Remove radiator.

8. Remove power steering pump; lay aside.

9. Remove engine cover.

10. Remove air cleaner.

11. Disconnect Throttle Body Injection (TBI) unit.

12. Disconnect engine wiring harness from the connector on the dash panel.

13. Disconnect vacuum hoses and electrical wiring, as required.

14. Disconnect heater pipe at the engine.

15. Remove thermostat housing.

16. Remove oil filler tube.

17. Remove cruise control servo, bracket, and transducer, as equipped.

18. Raise vehicle and support with safety stands.

19. Disconnect exhaust pipes at the exhaust manifolds.

20. Remove Propeller shaft at the transmission. Plug the transmission end.

21. Disconnect transmission shift linkage and vehicle speed sensor connection.

22. Disconnect fuel and vapor return hoses at the engine.

23. Drain the engine oil.

24. Remove rear engine mounting bolts.

CAUTION: When raising or supporting the engine for any reason, do not use a jack under the oil pan, crankshaft pulley, or any sheet metal. Due to the small clearance between the oil pan and the oil pump screen, jacking against the oil pan may cause it to be bent against the pump screen resulting In a damaged oil pickup unit.

25. Support the engine with a suitable jack.

26. Remove front engine mounting bracket to frame bolts and nuts.

27. Remove front engine mounting through-bolts.

28. Remove front engine mounting frame brackets. Raise the engine slightly to allow removal of the mounting bracket. Block the engine in place with wood blocks.

29. Lower the vehicle.

30. Install a suitable lifting fixture.

31. Remove engine and transmission from the vehicle.
