SUBJECT: SPECIAL POLICY ADJUSTMENT - LACK OF SPECIFIED 20 GALLON FUEL TANK
MODELS: EARLY 1988 S-15 PICKUP TRUCKS (EXCEPT X81 AND X9H)
General Motors has determined that instead of the specified 20 gallon fuel tank, a 13 gallon fuel tank was installed in certain 1988 S-15 pickup and chassis cab model trucks (except options X81 and X9H) built at the Moraine and Shreveport assembly plants. The price label on an affected vehicle states that the unit has a 20 gallon tank (the price of the 20 gallon tank is included in the base vehicle price) but the absence of NK2 from this service information label indicates that it has a 13 gallon fuel tank. Dealers were notified of this matter on November 10, 1987.
SPECIAL POLICY ADJUSTMENT
Original owners of record who purchased their vehicles on or before November 10, 1987, will be contacted and offered a choice of the following:
A. $100.00 total reimbursement adjustment incentive.
OR
B. Installation of a 20 gallon fuel tank at no charge.
When the original purchaser requests reimbursement, that customer MUST sign and date the Option Selection form included as part of the owner letter (extra copies to be reproduced locally, if needed). The signed form and a copy of the check issued to the owner is to be attached to the dealer's file copy of the request within thirty (30) days after dealer credit is received, and retained for twenty-four (24) months from date of credit. For vehicles in dealer inventory after November 10, 1987, and not sold, dealers were requested to disclose this condition to the prospective purchaser and to make an appropriate price adjustment in the amount of $51 MSRP from the MSRP for the base vehicle.
This is GMC Truck's calculation of the portion of the vehicle's MSRP attributable to the larger fuel tank ($44.01) dealer price. For vehicles still in dealer inventory and not sold in January, 1988, new price labels reflecting the above were sent to dealers with the request that they be applied to the affected vehicles. Dealers should take the necessary steps to disclose to customers the size of the fuel tank installed in an affected vehicle prior to sale. The Special Policy Adjustment will remain in effect until May 15, 1989 with no mileage restriction. This Special Policy Adjustment Bulletin should be filed in the three-ring binder furnished to the dealer by General Motors.

Involved are certain 1988 S-15 pickup and chassis cab model trucks (except options X81 and X9H) built within the following VIN breakpoints which were sold to retail purchasers on or before November 10, 1987.

PARTS INFORMATION
When required, parts are to be obtained from General Motors Service Parts Operations (GMSPO). To ensure that these parts are obtained as soon as possible, they should be ordered on a C.I.O. order with NO special instruction code, but order under an advise code (2).

SERVICE PROCEDURE
NOTICE: Intank electric fuel pump will be reused; do not discard intank fuel pump.
1. Drain fuel tank. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Have a dry chemical (Class B) fire extinguisher nearby.
CAUTION: To help avoid a fire or explosion, never drain or store gasoline or diesel fuel in an open container.
Use a hand operated pump device to drain as much fuel as possible through the filler neck. On some fuel tank installations, the filler neck is too long to gain access to the fuel. If the tank is not full, disconnect filler neck hose, at the fuel tank, to gain access to the fuel.
Alternate method:
a. Disconnect fuel feed pipe and attach a hand operated pump device.
b. Energize the fuel pump relay.
c. With fuel pump running, operate hand pump to remove fuel.
2. Relieve fuel system pressure (2.5L Engine only).
3. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
4. Remove fuel tank and tank shield, if so equipped.
5. Remove sender unit and pump by turning the cam lock counterclockwise using tool J- 36608 or J-24187 to remove fuel pump from the sending unit.
- Pull the fuel pump up into the attaching hose while pulling outward from the bottom support.
- Do not damage the rubber insulator or the strainer.
6. Install fuel pump on new sender. Install sender into new fuel tank. The new sender seal must also be used.
7. Install fuel tank-torque bolts:
Front Bolt to 5-8 N-m (4-6 ft.lbs.) Rear Bolt to 30-40 N-m (19-30 ft.lbs.)
8. Install front tank shield and torque nut to 14-18 N-m (11-14 ft.lbs.).
9. Lower truck and reconnect negative battery cable.
10. Refill fuel tank.

Contact your GMC Truck dealer to request reimbursement or make arrangements to have a 20 gallon fuel tank installed in your vehicle at no charge to you. Please complete and sign the Option Selection Form below and present it to your GMC Truck dealer as notification of your choice.
