Second Clutch

1. Remove ring gear retaining ring, ring gear, spacer plate retaining ring, spacer ring and second clutch plates, see images. Keep the clutch plates in the same order as were removed.

2. Remove second-to-third clutch bronze thrust washer, see image.

3. Install compressor J-23327 on return spring retainer. Compress the piston return springs and remove piston snap ring, see image.

4. Remove spring retainer, 22 return springs and clutch piston.

5. Inspect clutch piston for damage. If check ball falls out during inspection, replace the piston, see image. Install two new piston lip seals.

6. Check piston return springs for heat discoloration or other damage. Replace if necessary.

7. Check second clutch hub bushing for wear or scoring. If worn, remove old bushing using J-23130-6 and J-8092, see image. Install new bushing using the same tools, driving the bushing until the tool bottoms on bench, see image.

8. Slide tool J-23080 over piston to compressor lip seal, then lubricate and install piston into clutch drum, see image.

9. Install the 22 springs and retaining seat on second clutch piston. Use compressor J-23327 on retaining seat, Compress clutch return springs and install snap ring, see image above step 3. Use caution when pressing retaining seat into position since damage may occur if the seat engages the snap ring groove.

10. Install second to third thrust washer with tang seated in the slot of second clutch drum, see image above step two. Secure washer with petroleum jelly.

11. Inspect steel and composition clutch plates for wear, burning or other damage.

12. Install second clutch cushion plate (wave washer) into clutch drum, then alternately install clutch plates beginning with a steel plate. Lubricate clutch plates with transmission fluid during assembly. New composition plates must be soaked in automatic transmission fluid for 15 minutes before installation.

13. Install second clutch spacer plate into drum, with wavy end facing toward clutch plates. If necessary, use a screwdriver to expand plate until ends of spacer are evenly butted together in drum.

14. Install second clutch spacer retaining ring, the ring gear with grooved edge facing upward and ring gear retaining ring, see second and third image above step one.
