Brake Pedal Travel
^ Tools Required- J 28662 Brake Pedal Effort Gauge
DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE
At frequent intervals, check the brake pedal travel. Brake pedal travel is the distance the pedal moves toward the floor from a fully released position. Make this check with the brakes cold. Apply about 445 N (100 lbs.) on the pedal using the J 28662.
1. Apply the brake pedal six to ten times with the engine OFF.
2. Measure the distance (1) from the bottom of the steering wheel to the brake.
3. Apply about 445 N (100 lbs.) of force to the brake pedal using the J 28662.
4. With the force applied to the brake pedal, measure the distance (2) from the bottom of the steering wheel to the brake pedal.
5. Subtract measurement (1) from measurement (2) in order to determine brake pedal travel.
6. Brake pedal travel should be 50 - 72 mm (2 - 3 inch).
7. If brake pedal travel exceeds specifications, refer to Brake System Diagnosis.
