Parking Brake Shoe Inspection

Parking Brake Shoe Inspection
Warning: Refer to Brake Dust Warning (Brake Dust Warning).


1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle (Service and Repair).
2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Service and Repair).
3. Remove the rear brake caliper bracket with the rear brake caliper. Refer to Rear Brake Caliper Bracket Replacement (1500 Series) (Rear Brake Caliper Bracket Replacement (1500 Series))Rear Brake Caliper Bracket Replacement (2500 Series) (Rear Brake Caliper Bracket Replacement (2500 Series)).

Note: DO NOT apply the park brake pedal with the rotors removed.

4. Remove the rear brake rotor. Refer to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (1500 Series) (Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (1500 Series))Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (2500 Series) (Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (2500 Series)).
5. Inspect and replace the park brake shoe and lining if any of the following conditions are found:

* Excessive wear indicated by the park brake lining being worn down to the shoe
* Park brake lining cracking
* Oil or fluid contamination of the park brake lining

6. Adjust the park brake shoe. Refer to Parking Brake Adjustment (1500) (Parking Brake Adjustment (1500))Parking Brake Adjustment (2500) (Parking Brake Adjustment (2500)).
7. Install the rear brake rotor. Refer to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (1500 Series) (Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (1500 Series))Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (2500 Series) (Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (2500 Series)).
8. Install the rear brake caliper with the rear brake caliper bracket. Refer to Rear Brake Caliper Bracket Replacement (1500 Series) (Rear Brake Caliper Bracket Replacement (1500 Series))Rear Brake Caliper Bracket Replacement (2500 Series) (Rear Brake Caliper Bracket Replacement (2500 Series)).
9. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Service and Repair).
10. Lower the vehicle.
