Ignition Timing: Adjustments
Ignition Timing Mark And Notch:
IGNITION TIMING
NOTE: Prior to check and adjustment of ignition timing, make sure that headlamps, blower motor, rear defogger, and air conditioner are "OFF." If one of these systems is "ON," the idle up system will operate, and the engine idle speed will be higher than specification.
1. Start engine and warm it up to normal operating temperature.
2. After warming up, be sure that the idle speed is within specification. If idle speed is out of specification, adjust it by turning the idle speed adjusting screw at the throttle body.
3. Connect a timing light to the high tension wire of No. 1 cylinder.
4. With the engine running at specified idle speed, direct the timing light to the crankshaft pulley. If the 8° BTDC timing mark on the timing tab is aligned to the timing notch on the crankshaft pulley, the ignition is properly timed. If the ignition timing is out of specification, loosen the distributor flange bolt and turn the distributor:
a. Clockwise to retard the timing.
b. Counterclockwise to advance the timing
c. Tighten the flange bolt and recheck the ignition timing.
