System Diagnosis

NOTE: The following procedure should be followed if the vehicle cranks but will not start.

1. Check for spark at each spark plug with a spark tester.
^ If no spark is detected, proceed to step 2.
^ If spark is detected only on some spark plugs, check for faulty distributor cap or rotor. Also check the spark plus and the spark plug wires. Replace as needed.

2. Check for voltage at the ignition coil positive (+) terminal with a digital volt/ohm meter.
^ If battery voltage is detected, proceed to step 3.
^ If battery voltage is not detected, repair the open in the wiring between the battery and ignition coil.

3. Check the ignition coil resistance using a digital volt/ohm meter. Refer to IGNITION COIL TESTING.
^ If ignition coil resistance is within specifications proceed to step 4.
^ If the ignition coil resistance is NOT within specification, replace the ignition coil.

4. Check the resistance of the noise filter and condenser with a digital volt/ohm meter.
^ If the resistance is 2.0 - 2.5 ohms for both units, proceed to step 5.
^ If the resistance is NOT 2.0 - 2.5 ohms for both units, replace both units.

5. Using a digital volt/ohm meter, check for continuity between the ignition coil negative (-) terminal and the distributor.
^ If continuity exsists, replace the pickup coil and the igniter. Refer to COMPONENT REPLACEMENT AND REPAIR PROCEDURES/DISTRIBUTOR ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENT/DISASSEMBLY.
