The following procedure for removing the automatic transaxle was not included in Section 7A of the 1989 Geo Tracker Service Manual (ST377-89).
TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY
vRemove or Disconnect
1. Negative battery cable.
2. Detent cable at throttle body unit.
3. Fluid level indicator.
4. Modulator vacuum hose at manifold.
5. Starter.
6. Two upper transmission retaining bolts.
7. Fan shroud bolts.
8. Distributor cap.
vImportant
^ Support engine from falling back and damaging distributor unit.
9. Interior console.
10. Transfer case shifter, boot assembly.
11. Raise vehicle.
12. Front and rear drive shafts.
^ ^ Mark drive shaft alignment.
13. Transfer case skid plate.
14. Speedometer cable from transfer case.
15. Flywheel inspection cover.
^ Mark flywheel and torque convener for reassembly.
16 Torque converter to flywheel bolts.
17. Shifter linkage.
^ Shifter cable remining clip and disconnect cable.
18. Oil cooler lines.
19. Exhaust bracket at catalytic converter and at transmission.
20. Support transmission.
21. Cross member.
22. Two transmission lower retaining nuts.
23. Lower transmission and disconnect breather and electrical leads.
24. Transmission and transfer case assembly from vehicle.
vInstall or Connect
1. Transmission and transfer case assembly into vehicle.
2. Breather and electrical leads.
3. Two transmission lower retaining nuts 84 N-m (62 ft.lbs.).
4. Cross member.
5. Speedometer cable to transfer case.
6. Exhaust bracket at catalytic converter and at transmission.
7. Oil cooler lines.
8. Shifter linkage and cable retaining clip.
9. Torque converter to flywheel bolts 50 N-m (37 ft.lb.).
10. Flywheel inspection cover.
11. Front and rear drive shafts 50 N-m (37 ft.lbs.).
12. Transfer case skid plate.
13. Lower vehicle.
14. Transfer case shifter and boot assembly.
15. Interior console.
16. Distributor cap.
17. Fan shroud bolts.
18. Two upper transmission retaining bolts 84 N-m (62 ft.lb).
19. Starter.
20. Modulator vacuum hose at manifold.
21. Fluid level indicator.
22. Detent cable at throttle body unit.
23. Negative battery cable.
