EGR Temperature Sensor: Description and Operation

The EGR valve has a temperature sensor mounted at the base of the EGR valve. This sensor is similar to a coolant and air temperature sensor. It is designed to work at extremely high temperature. The ECM monitors a signal from the EGR gas temperature sensor to determine if the EGR valve is "ON" when the ECM commands the EGR valve to be "ON." It also uses this sensor to determine if the EGR valve is stuck in the open postion or possibly the EGR valve orifice is slightly restricted. A Code 32 will result from a shorted or open EGR gas temperature sensor.
