Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) System Check

EGR TEST

1. Run engine to normal operating temperature 60°C (140°F).
2. Place a finger on the EGR valve diaphragm and accelerate engine, diaphragm should move.
3. If diaphragm doesn't move, disconnect vacuum hose from EGR valve and plug.
4. Using a vacuum pump, apply 10" inches of vacuum to the valve with a finger on the diaphragm. It should move and the engine may stall.
5. If valve fails, replace valve.

EGR Modulator Checks:

EGR MODULATOR TEST

1. Remove (3) vacuum hoses from modulator.
2. Place finger over modulator tube and blow in opposite tube. Air should pass through filter part of modulator.
3. Connect vacuum pump to "P" and plug tube "Q" with a cap or your finger.
4. Blow air into Tube "A." You should not be able to obtain a vacuum on the pump.
5. If EGR modulator fails this test, replace modulator.

VSV Solenoid:

EGR VACUUM SWITCHING VALVE SOLENOID TEST

1. Turn ignition switch "OFF."
2. Disconnect vacuum hoses from solenoid.
3. Disconnect electrical connector.
3. Using an analog or digital ohm meter, check resistance between the two terminals. Refer to SPECIFICATIONS.
4. If resistance is within specification proceed to step 5. If not, replace solenoid.
5. Blow air into tube "A," air should exhaust through filter, not tube "B."
6. Reconnect electrical connector.

Diagnosis Switch Terminal:

7. With ignition ON, ground Diagnosis Switch Terminal.
8. Blow air into tube "A," air should exhaust from tube "B." If VSV solenoid fails the check, replace VSV.
