Engine: Service and Repair

1. Relieve fuel system pressure as outlined under Fuel Pressure Relief. Under Powertrain Management/Computers and Control Systems/System Diagnosis/Procedures/Diagnostic Charts/A Charts/Chart A-7 Fuel System Diagnosis.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. Disconnect windshield washer hose, then remove hood.
4. Remove air cleaner assembly.
5. Drain cooling system, then remove radiator and engine cooling fan.
6. Disconnect high tension lead from ignition coil.
7. Disconnect electrical connector from distributor.
8. Disconnect electrical connectors from coolant temperature sender, engine coolant temperature sensor, engine cooling fan switch and engine oil pressure sender.
9. Disconnect electrical connector from EGR vacuum switching valve.
10. Disconnect electrical connectors from idle speed control valve, throttle position switch, fuel injector and pressure sensor.
11. Disconnect electrical connectors and wiring from alternator and starter motor.
12. Disconnect electrical connector from oxygen sensor.
13. Disconnect battery ground cable from transaxle.
14. On models with manual transaxle, disconnect electrical connector from back-up lamp switch.
15. On models with automatic transaxle, disconnect electrical connectors from neutral safety switch, speed sensor and direct clutch and second brake solenoids.
16. On all models, disconnect intake manifold to power brake unit vacuum hose.
17. Disconnect evaporative emission canister hoses from intake manifold and tube connections.
18. Disconnect fuel hoses from throttle body.
19. Disconnect heater hoses from engine.
20. Disconnect accelerator cable from throttle body.
21. On models with manual transaxle, disconnect clutch cable from fork and housing.
22. On models with automatic transaxle, disconnect shift control and fluid pressure control cables from transaxle.
23. On all models, disconnect speedometer cable from transaxle.
24. Raise and support vehicle, then disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold.
25. Drain engine crankcase, then drain fluid from transaxle.
26. On models with manual transaxle, disconnect control shaft and extension rod from transaxle.
27. On all models, separate drive axles from transaxle. Support drive axles from chassis using wire.
28. On models with automatic transaxle, remove engine torque rod bracket from transaxle.
29. Lower vehicle and install an engine lifting fixture.
30. Remove engine and transaxle mounting bolts, then remove engine and transaxle assembly from vehicle.
31. Reverse procedure to install.
