Ignition Timing: Adjustments


NOTE: Refer to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Label located in the engine compartment. Follow all instructions on the label.

1. Start engine and run until normal operating temperature is attained.

2. Turn all electrical accessories off.

Tachometer Hook Up Prizm:






3. Open the data link connector cap. Connect a tachometer to between battery and DLC terminal "IG-"

4. Check that idle speed is at 750 ± 50 rpm with trans axle in neutral.

5. Turn ignition off and connect a timing light to No. 1 spark plug wire

6. Insert a jumper wire between DLC terminals "E1" and "TE1".

Adjusting Ignition Timing:






7. Start engine and aim timing light at timing marks. The notch should line up with the 10° mark on timing cover.

Checking Ignition Timing:






8. If adjustment is required, loosen the distributor mounting bolts. While observing the timing indicator, slowly rotate the distributor until a 10° reading is obtained. Tighten distributor mounting bolts to 15 ft-lbs (20 Nm).

9. Recheck ignition timing and adjust as required.

10. Remove jumper wire from the DLC and close the cap. Recheck ignition timing. Timing should be varying between 5 and 15 degrees BTDC.

11. Remove the timing light.
