GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Aisin Warner 03-72LE is a four speed fully automatic electronically controlled transmission providing four forward gear ranges and one reverse range, Fig. 2.

Mechanical

The gearing devices used in this transmission consist of three sets of planetary gear units, three disc type clutches, four disc type brakes and three one-way clutches. This transmission is equipped with an overdrive gear which is engaged when the "OD" switch is depressed on the manual selector. Overdrive is used for all normal driving conditions. It provides four gear ratios plus torque converter (TCC) operation. On vehicle with four wheel drive, Overdrive is not available when the transfer case is set in the 4L range. The "Power/Normal" switch is located on the console, it allows the driver to select from two gearshift change timing modes. The "Power mode" can be selected for better acceleration or performance. The "Normal mode" is selected for maximum fuel efficiency.

Electronic Control System

The electronic control system provides precise gearshift timing and torque converter clutch (TCC) lock-up timing, via the TCM, which evaluates driving conditions. The electronic control system consist of three main component groups, information sensors, TCM, and actuators. The electronic control system is equipped with a self diagnosis system and a fail safe mode. The self diagnosis system will warn the driver of a malfunction by continuous on-off flashing of the "OD/OFF" indicator and illumination of the "Service Engine Soon" indicator will occur. The fail-safe mode will provide the driver with minimum driveability until the malfunction can be corrected.
