REMOVE OR DISCONNECT

^ Tools Required:
- J 23327 Clutch Spring Compressor
- J 23082 Converter Housing to Pump Assembly Alignment Tool
- J 21359 Seal Installation Tool

1. Oil pump gasket (207).
2. Oil pump outer seal (223).
3. Five converter housing to pump bolts (202).
4. Separate the pump (222) from the converter housing (205).
5. Pump wear plate (208).
6. Pump gears (209, 210).
- Mark location of pump gears for proper assembly.
7. Install J 23327.
8. Compress the reverse clutch return springs (229).
9. Reverse clutch piston spring seat retainer ring (231).
10. Release the reverse clutch return springs (229).

CAUTION: DO NOT LET SPRING SEAT CATCH IN RING GROOVE.

11. Remove J 23327, spring seat (230), and return springs (229).
12. Reverse clutch piston (228). Apply 40 psi compressed air to the "apply" fluid passage.
13. Reverse clutch piston inner seal (226) and reverse clutch piston outer seal (227) if necessary.

DISASSEMBLE
- Do not remove the converter clutch control aide (217), pressure regulator valve (216), or the reverse boost valve (213), unless determined by fluid pressure checks to be malfunctioning.

CAUTION: Valves are under spring pressure, use caution when disassembling.

1. Clutch control valve pin (22()) from the converter clutch control port.
2. Clutch control valve plug (219), spring (218) and clutch control valve (217).
3. Reverse boost sleeve retainer pin (211) from the pressure regulator valve port.
4. Reverse boost sleeve (212), reverse boost valve (213), spring (215), spring seats (214), and pressure regulator valve (216).
5. 2nd clutch oil seal rings (225).

Inspect
^ Reverse boost valve (213), pressure regulator valve (216), and the converter clutch control valve (217) for:
- Nicks.
- Scoring.
- Damage.
^ 2nd clutch oil seal rings (225) for:
- Side wear.
- Damage.

Clean
- Thoroughly Clean the pressure regulator valve (216), reverse boost valve (213). and the converter clutch control valve (217).

ASSEMBLE

NOTE: Soak valves in DEXRON(R)II transmission fluid.

1. Clutch control valve (217), spring (218), clutch control valve plug (219) and retainer pin (220).
2. Pressure regulator valve (216), Spring seats (214), spring (215), reverse boost valve (213), reverse boost sleeve (212), and retainer pin (211).
3. 2nd clutch oil seal rings (225).

ASSEMBLE
1. Reverse clutch piston inner (226) and outer (227) seals.
2. Reverse clutch piston (228) onto the rear face of the pump assembly (222).
3. Clutch piston return springs (229).
4. Spring seat (230) and set retainer ring (231) onto clutch hub.
5. Install J 23327.
6. Compress clutch piston return springs (229).
7. Retainer ring (231) into groove.
8. Remove J 23327.

ASSEMBLE

- Pump gears (209, 210) with marks, made on pears during disassembly facing up.

Measure
- Use a straight edge and a feeler gage to measure between the gear face and the pump face.
- Clearance should be 0.0127 to 0.0839 mm (0.0005 to 0.00325 inch).

ASSEMBLE

NOTICE: Failure to use converter housing to pump alignment tool J 23082 will cause pump damage when transmission is operated alter assembly.

1. Pump wear plate (208).
2. Converter housing oil seal (204). Use J 21359.
3. Converter housing (205) onto the pump assembly (222).
4. Loosely install pump bolts (202).
5. Install J 23082. Tool will bottom out on the pump gear.
6. Tighten pump bolts (202) to half torque, then tighten to 19 N.m (14 lb. ft.) in an alternating pattern.
7. Remove J 23082.
8. Pump to case gasket (207).
- Retain with TRANSJEL J 36850 or equivalent.
9. Pump outer seal (223).
10. Converter housing and reverse clutch assembly.
- Use guide pins J 3387-2.
- Converter housing to case bolts (203).
Tighten
- Bolt to 33 N.m (24 lb. ft.).
- Rotate input shaft to check for proper assembly.
