Servo Piston
DISASSEMBLE
^ Tools Required:
- J 23075 Servo Piston Spring Compressor
- J 38428 Servo Piston Ring Installer
NOTICE: Band assembly should be in the correct position.
1. Servo piston assembly (166) and apply rod (157).
2. Locknut (165).
3. Position servo piston (162) and sleeve (158) in a press.
4. Compress the cushion spring (161).
5. Cushion spring retainer (159).
6. Release the cushion spring (161).
7. Sleeve (158), spring seat (160), cushion spring (161) and adjusting screw (164).
Inspect
- Servo piston seal ring (163) for:
- Nicks, burrs, or side damage.
- Piston sleeve (158) for nicks or burrs.
- Apply rod (157) for nicks, burrs, or scoring.
ASSEMBLE
1. Spring seat (160) onto the sleeve (158).
2. Insert the cushion spring (161) and sleeve assembly (158) into the piston (162).
3. Position the piston (162) and sleeve (158) in a press.
4. Compress the cushion spring (161).
5. Cushion spring retainer (159).
6. Release the cushion spring (161).
7. Adjusting screw (164) into the sleeve (158).
8. Locknut (165). Do not tighten.
9. Piston seal ring (163), if necessary.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Servo apply rod (157), return spring (156), and piston assembly (166).
- Round end of apply rod goes into case.
2. Install J 23075 with tool offset toward the rear of the case. Place J 38428 sleeve inside J 23075.
3. Place piston assembly (166) inside J 38428 sleeve.
4. Compress the servo piston return spring (156) using J 23075.
5. Servo piston retainer ring (167).
6. Remove J 23075 and J 38428.
Adjust
1. Hold the servo piston sleeve (158).
- Proceed with the adjusting operation by using a torque wrench with a 3/16 inch hex head.
2. Loosen the servo loci; nut (165).
3. Tighten the adjusting bolt (164) up to 4.5 N.m (40 lb. in.).
4. Be certain that the lock nut (165) remains loose.
5. Back off the adjusting bolt (164) exactly five turns.
6. Tighten the lock nut (165) at 18.9 N.m (14 lb. ft.) by holding the adjusting bolt (164) and sleeve (158) firmly.
