Cylinder Head Assembly: Testing and Inspection

CAUTION: Do not use any sharp edged tool to scrape off carbon. Be careful not to scuff or nick the metal surfaces when decarboning. This could lead to leakage and reduced power output.

INSPECT
1. Clean cylinder head with solvent, air dry thoroughly. Remove all carbon from combustion chambers.
2. Cylinder head for cracks in intake and exhaust ports, combustion chambers, and head surface.








3. Flatness of cylinder head gasket surface. Using a straightedge and feeler gage, check surface at a total of six locations. If distortion exceeds the 0.05 mm (0.002 inch) limit at any location, resurfacing of the head is necessary. If distortion cannot be brought within limits, replace cylinder head. Leakage of combustion gases from this gasket joint is often due to a warped gasket surface; such leakage results in reduced power output.








4. Distortion of manifold seating faces. Using a straightedge and a feeler gage, check seating faces of intake and exhaust manifolds-to-cylinder head to determine whether these faces can be corrected or cylinder head replaced. If measurement after any correction exceeds 0.10 mm (0.004 inch), replace cylinder head.
