Speakers Whine During Cassette Player Use

SYMPTOM

A whining noise comes from the speakers when you use the cassette player. The noise gets louder as engine speed increases.

PROBABLE CAUSE

A power wire in the instrument panel wire harness is routed too close to the radio.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Install a noise suppression plate on top of the radio.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Write down the radio station presets.

2. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.

3. On vehicles with A/T, move the shift lever to "L."





4. Remove the lower cluster assembly.





5. Remove the audio unit (the radio, and if equipped, the CD changer or CD player).





6. Peel off the backing from the radio noise suppression plate, and press the plate (adhesive side down) onto the top of the radio in the exact location shown.

NOTE:
Covering the vent holes on top of the radio does not affect radio performance or durability.

7. Reinstall the audio unit and the lower cluster assembly.

8. Reconnect the negative cable to the battery.

9. Reset the clock, and enter the radio station presets.
