1998 Passport: Brake Judder

SYMPTOM
The brake pedal pulsates when the brakes are applied. The brake pedal pulsation may be accompanied by brake squeal.

PROBABLE CAUSE
Excessive front hub runout.

VEHICLES AFFECTED
1998 Passport:
Units produced between June 1998 and August 1998 with VINs from 4S6C.58W.W4422197 through 4S6C.58W.W4425461

CORRECTIVE ACTION
If the vehicle is within the production dates and VIN range, replace both front hubs, and refinish both front brake rotors.

If the vehicle is outside the production dates and VIN range, measure front brake rotor runout with a dial indicator.

^ If front brake rotor runout is more than 0.40 mm (0.015"), replace both front hubs and refinish both front brake rotors (see REPAIR PROCEDURE).

^ If front brake rotor runout is less than 0.40 mm (0.015"), refinish both front brake rotors. Refer to Service Bulletin 86-020, Brake Disc Refinishing Guidelines, filed under Steering/Brakes/Suspension.

Out of warranty: Any repair performed after warranty expiration may be eligible for goodwill consideration by the District Service Manager or your Zone Office. You must request consideration, and get a decision, before starting work.





REQUIRED SPECIAL TOOLS

REPAIR PROCEDURE: 2WD MODELS

1. Raise the vehicle on a lift.

2. Remove both front wheels and both front brake calipers.

3. Remove and disassemble the front hub and rotor assemblies. Do steps 3 through 11 on page 4C-3 of the 1998 Passport Service Manual.

4. Remove the ABS sensor ring.

5. Assemble the new front hubs using the original rotors, wheel bearings, and hardware. Do steps 3, 4, and 5 on page 4C-5 of the 1998 Passport Service Manual.

6. Refinish both front brake rotors off the car.

7. Reinstall the ABS sensor ring.

8. Reassemble both front hub and rotor assemblies. Do steps 6 through 11, including the wheel bearing preload adjustment on page 4C-6 of the 1998 Passport Service Manual.

NOTE: Use a dead-blow hammer when installing the new grease seal.

REPAIR PROCEDURE: 4WD MODELS

1. Before disassembly, make sure the vehicle is in 2WD by selecting the 2WD position with the 4WD switch.

2. Raise the vehicle on a lift.

3. Remove both front wheels and both front brake calipers.

4. Remove and disassemble the front hub and rotor assemblies. Do steps 4 through 14 on page 4C-8, of the 1998 Passport Service Manual.

5. Assemble the new front hubs using the original rotors, wheel bearings, and hardware. Do steps 2, 3, and 4 on page 4C-10 of the 1998 Passport Service Manual.

6. Refinish both front brake rotors off the car.

7. Reassemble both front hub and rotor assemblies. Do steps 5 through 13, including the wheel bearing preload adjustment on page 4C-11 of the 1998 Passport Service Manual.

NOTE: Use a dead-blow hammer when installing the new grease seal.
