Wheel Hub: Service and Repair

Replacement

REAR DRUM BRAKE TYPE: '99 - 01 models
1. Raise the rear of the vehicle, and make sure it is securely supported.





2. Remove the wheel nuts (A) and rear wheel (B).
3. Press the parking brake pedal.
4. Remove the hub cap (C).
5. Raise the locking tab on the spindle nut (D), then remove the nut.
6. Release the parking brake pedal.





7. Screw two 8 x 1.25 mm bolts into the drum to push it away from the hub bearing unit. Turn each bolt two turns at a time to prevent cocking the brake drum excessively. Remove the brake drum from the hub bearing unit. If the drum does not come off easily, back off the brake adjuster one full turn (23 teeth).





8. Remove the hub bearing unit.
9. Install the hub bearing unit in the reverse order of removal, and pay particular attention to the following items:
- Wash the bearing and spindle thoroughly in high flash point solvent before reassembly.
- Before installing the new spindle nut, apply a small amount of engine oil to the seating surface of the nut.
- After tightening, use a drift to stake the spindle nut shoulder against the spindle.
- Inspect the purser teeth for any damage.

REAR DISC BRAKE TYPE: '02 model
1. Loosen the wheel nuts slightly.
2. Raise the rear of the vehicle, and make sure it is securely supported.





3. Remove the wheel nuts (A) and rear wheel (B).





4. Remove the caliper mounting bolts, and hang the caliper assembly (A) to one side. To prevent damage to the caliper assembly or brake hose, use a short piece of wire to hang the caliper from the undercarriage.
5. Press the parking brake pedal.





6. Remove the hub cap (A).
7. Raise the locking tab on the spindle nut (B), then remove the nut.





8. Remove the brake disc/drum retaining screws (A).
9. Release the parking brake pedal, and remove the brake disc/drum.
10. Screw two 8 x 1.25 mm bolts into the brake disc/drum to push it away from the hub. Turn each bolt two turns at a time to prevent cocking the disc/drum excessively.





11. Remove the hub bearing unit.
12. Check the rear hub for damage and cracks.
13. Install the hub bearing unit in the reverse order of removal, and pay particular attention to the following items:
- Wash the bearing and spindle thoroughly in high flash point solvent before reassembly.
- Before installing the new spindle nut, apply a small amount of engine oil to the seating surface of the nut.
- After tightening, use a drift to stake the spindle nut shoulder against the spindle.
- Inspect the purser teeth for any damage.
