Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Fast Idle Speed

On fuel injected engines, fast idle speed is controlled by the fast idle valve and no adjustment is provided. Adjust fast idle speed on carbureted engines using the following procedures.

Fig. 4 Disconnecting thermowax linkage.:

Fig. 5 Aligning fast idle lever.:

Fig. 6 Automatic choke fast idle adjustment.:

1. Start engine and allow to reach normal operating temperature, then stop engine and connect suitable tachometer.
2. Remove E-clip and flat washer from thermowax linkage, then slide out linkage until its tab is clear of the fast idle cam, Fig. 4. Use care not to bend linkage or fast idle speed will be changed.
3. Hold throttle open and turn fast idle cam counterclockwise until fast idle lever is aligned as shown in Fig. 5.
4. Start engine without opening the throttle, then check idle speed.
5. If fast idle speed is not within specifications, adjust by turning fast idle screw, Fig. 6.
