Fig. 34 Purge cut-off solenoid valve check.:
1985-87 Civic & CRX W/Fuel Injected Engine
When the purge control solenoid is activated there should be at least 9 volts between the black (+) and red wire terminals of the control box connector on 1985-86 models or black/yellow (+) and red/white wire terminals of the control box connector on 1987 models. The solenoid is activated for 5 seconds whenever the engine is started, and whenever coolant temperature is below 158 °F.
1. Disconnect control box 8P coupler and vacuum hose No. 19 from the install pipe, Fig. 34.
2. Apply vacuum to solenoid valve using a suitable hand vacuum pump. Valve should not hold vacuum.
3. Connect battery positive terminal to black (1985-86) or black/yellow (1987) terminal of control box and negative battery terminal to red (1985---86) or red/white (1987) terminal of control box.
4. Apply vacuum to solenoid valve using a suitable hand vacuum pump. Valve should hold vacuum.
5. If valve does not operate as specified, replace valve.
