New Clutch Replacement Parts
(Supersedes 89-024, dated August 4, 1989)
New clutch components improve durability under frequent stop-and-go driving conditions.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Replace the clutch friction disc and pressure plate with the new parts listed under PARTS INFORMATION.
[WARNING] Inhaled asbestos fibers have been found to cause respiratory disease and cancer. Never use an air hose or dry brush to clean the clutch assembly. Use an OSHA-approved vacuum cleaner or alternate method approved by OSHA, designed to minimize the hazard caused by airborne asbestos fibers.
1. Replace the clutch set, using the procedure outlined in the appropriate service manual.
2. Replace the clutch release bearing as a part of this procedure (standard part).
3. Adjust the clutch pedal free-play to specifications.
NOTE:
^ The new clutch set (disc and pressure plate) called for in this bulletin must be installed as a unit. Combining either of these new components with the standard clutch disc or pressure plate will cause harsh clutch action, chattering, short service life, and slippage during hard acceleration.
^ Clearly note on the repair order that new part number clutch components have been installed. Tell the customer to retain this information so the proper components can be installed if any future clutch work is needed.
^ Clutch pedal free-play is critical to clutch life. The decreased free-play that results from normal wear of the friction disc can eventually cause slippage, which accelerates the wear. After installation of the new clutch set, show the customer how to check the free-play at the pedal, emphasizing that it must be checked periodically and adjusted whenever necessary.
