The tools described below must be used in place of the tools shown in the Service Manual to check the mainshaft end play.
TOOL INFORMATION:
07GAJ-PG20110 - Mainshaft Holder Included with the Mainshaft Inspection Tools: T/N 07GAJ-PG2010A 07GAJ-PG20130 - Mainshaft Base 07GAJ-PG20120 - Collar
HOW TO USE:
1. Remove the transmission as described in the appropriate service manual.
2. Remove the release bearing from the transmission housing.
3. Slide the mainshaft base over the mainshaft onto the transmission housing or collar (if used).
NOTE: On all Civics except '88 and later 4WD wagons, slide the collar over the mainshaft onto the transmission housing before installing the base. Make sure the lip of the collar is facing the transmission.
4. Attach the mainshaft holder to the mainshaft as follows:
^ Back-out the mainshaft holder bolt and loosen the two Allen bolts.
^ Fit the holder over the mainshaft so its lip is towards the transmission.
^ Align the mainshaft holder's lip around the groove at the inside of the mainshaft splines, then tighten the Allen bolts.
6. Thread the mainshaft holder bolt in until it just contacts the wide surface of the mainshaft base.
7. Zero a dial gauge on the end of the mainshaft.
8. Turn the mainshaft holder bolt clockwise; stop turning when the dial gauge has reached its maximum movement. The reading on the dial gauge is the amount of mainshaft end play.
CAUTION: Turning the shaft holder bolt more than 60 degrees after the needle of the dial gauge stops moving may damage the transmission.
9. Check that the mainshaft end play is within the specification shown in the service manual. If the clearance is incorrect, disassemble the transmission and reshim the mainshaft as described in the service manual. Re-check the mainshaft end play after re-assembly.
