Keyless Entry Key Failure
PROBLEM
The remote key does not lock or unlock the doors.
PROBABLE CAUSE
The battery in the key is not able to hold a charge, or it is discharged because it hasn't been used.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
1. Check the keys for an infrared signal.
Hold an Infrared Sensor Card (see Tool Information) under the head of the key as shown and press the key button. Do this in a dark room so you'll be able to clearly see if light appears on the square. (If the card was stored in the dark, "charge" it first by exposing it to fluorescent light or daylight for a short time.)
If no light shows on the square, go to step 2.
If a blinking light shows on the square (a short series of blinks each time you press the button), the key is OK. Check the rest of the system; refer to the following control unit input tests:
- November '91 ServiceNews article "Accord Wagon Door Lock Test Correction."
- '92 Accord Service Manual, page 23-236 (use the '92 book for '91 cars).
2. Check the key charging system.
^ Put the key in the ignition switch and turn it to the ON position.
^ Touch the contacts on the sides of the key with the leads of a digital volt/ohmmeter, and take a voltage reading. It should be 9-10 volts.
- If your reading is within the specification, and the car has just been driven (key has been charged) for at least an hour, the key must be faulty. Replace the key (see Key Ordering).
- If your reading is within the specification, but the car has not just been driven for at least an hour, go on to step 3.
- If your reading is outside the specification, call American Honda Techline for further troubleshooting procedures.
3. Charge the key.
^ Put the key in the ignition switch, turn it to the RUN position, and leave it there for at least an hour. If the car battery is weak, charge it with a battery charger while the key is being charged.
^ Check for an infrared signal again. If light still does not show on the card, replace the key (see Key Ordering).
TOOL INFORMATION
You can buy infrared sensor cards at Radio Shack stores (catalog # 276-099), or call (800) 223-8344 and order them.

KEY ORDERING
1. Get the following information before you order a replacement key.
^ V.I.N. (Vehicle Identification Number)
^ Key code: the four-digit number on the blade of the original master key.
^ Transmitter code (SM5-XXXXX): the five-digit code on a metal tag delivered with the original transmitter keys. Also on the power door lock control unit under the driver's seat.
[NOTICE] Write down the the key code and transmitter codes correctly. American Honda is not responsible for replacing a key which is not usable because you supplied an incorrect code.
2. Call the Dealer Analyst at your Parts Center and ask for a Special Transmitter Key Order. You must call; regular dealer orders will not be accepted. The Analyst will record the information as an Urgent Parts Order (U.P.O.).
3. Advise the customer that a new, coded transmitter key will be shipped air express from Japan direct to your dealership in 4 to 6 weeks. Each key must be made to order, so delivery may take longer if demand is high.
