Balance Shaft Belt: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

CAUTION: Inspect the water pump when replacing the timing belt.

TDC Position:

NOTE: Turn the crankshaft so that the No. 1 cylinder is at TDC.

Splash Shield Removal:

1. Remove the splash shield.

Cruise Control Actuator Removal:

2. Disconnect the connector, then remove the cruise control actuator.

NOTE:
- Do not disconnect the control cable.
- Take care not to bend the cable when removing the actuator. Always replace a kinked cable with a new one.

Power Steering Pump Removal:

3. Remove the mounting bolt, nut and V-belt from the power steering pump, then remove the bolts and nuts. Loosen the adjusting bolt. Pull the pump away from the mounting bracket.

NOTE:
- Plug the pipe and the pump port.
- Do not disconnect the hose.
- After installing, adjust the tension of the power steering belt.

Alternator Belt Removal:

4. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.

NOTE: Anti-theft radios have a 5-digit coded theft protection circuit. Be sure to get the code number from the customer before:
- disconnecting the battery
- removing the No. 24 (7.5 A) fuse (in the under-hood fuse/relay box)
- removing the radio
After reconnecting power and turning the radio ON, the word "CODE" will be displayed. Enter the code at this time.

5. Disconnect the alternator terminal and the connector, then remove the engine wire harness from the cylinder head cover.
6. Loosen the alternator mounting bolt, nut and the adjusting bolt, then remove the alternator belt or air conditioning belt (cars equipped with air conditioning).

NOTE: After installing, adjust the tension of the alternator belt or air conditioning belt.

Exploded View:

7. Remove the cylinder head cover.
8. Remove the side engine mount bracket B (standard for some types).
9. Remove the upper cover.
10. Remove the side engine mount.
11. Remove the dipstick and the pipe.
12. Remove the timing belt adjuster rubber seal. Do not loosen the adjusting nut.
13. Remove the pulley bolt and the crankshaft pulley. Remove the two rear bolts from the center beam to allow the engine to drop down and give clearance to remove the lower cover.
14. Remove the lower cover.

Front View Belt Positioning:

15. Lock the timing belt adjuster arm in place by installing one of the 6 x 1.0 mm lower cover mounting bolts.
16. Loosen the timing belt adjusting nut. Push on the pulley to remove tension from the timing balancer belt, then tighten the adjusting nut.
17. Remove the timing balancer belt.

NOTE: If you are removing only the timing balancer belt, go to INSTALLATION, step 2. If you are removing both belts, continue with this procedure.

18. Loosen the 6 x 1.0 mm lock bolt and the adjusting nut. Push on the timing belt adjuster pulley to remove tension from the belt, then tighten the adjusting nut.
19. Remove the timing belt.

Water Pump Inspection:

20. Inspect the water pump.

INSTALLATION

TDC Position:

1. Install the timing belt in the reverse order of removal. Adjust the valve clearances.

- Before installing the timing belt, position the crankshaft and camshaft pulleys at TDC.

NOTE: Both belt adjusters are spring-loaded to properly tension the belts. Do not apply any extra pressure to the pulleys or tensioners while performing the adjustment.

2. Perform the timing belt tension adjustment:
- Loosen the adjusting nut 2/3-1 turn, then tighten adjusting nut.
- Rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise 3-teeth on the camshaft pulley, then reloosen the adjusting nut to create tension on the timing belt.
- Tighten the adjusting nut.

Front View Belt Positioning:

3. Tighten the 6 x 1.0 mm bolt to lock the timing adjuster arm.
4. Make sure the crankshaft is positioned with the No.1 cylinder at TDC.

Front View Belt Positioning:

5. Align the groove on the front balancer shaft pulley with the pointer on the oil pump housing as shown.
6. Align the rear balancer shaft pulley by using a 6 x 100 mm bolt or equivalent as an alignment tool. Scribe a line 74 mm (2.9 in) from the end of the bolt. Insert the bolt into the maintenance hole to the scribed line.
7. Loosen the adjusting nut and verify that the timing balancer belt adjuster moves freely.
8. Install the timing balancer belt. Remove the alignment tool.
9. Turn the crankshaft pulley about one turn, then tighten the adjusting nut to 45Nm (4.5 kg-m, 33 lb ft).
NOTE: Both belt adjusters are spring-loaded to properly tension the belts. Do not apply any extra pressure to the pulleys or tensioners while performing the adjustment.

10. Remove the 6 x 1.0 mm bolt from the timing belt adjuster arm.

Front Cover And Crank Pulley Installation:

11. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
12. Install the timing belt lower cover.
13. Install a new seal around the adjusting nut. Do not loosen the nut.
14. Install the timing belt upper cover.
15. Install the crankshaft pulley.
16. Coat the threads and seat face of the pulley bolt with engine oil. Install and tighten to the specified torque.

Specified torque: 220 Nm (22 kg-m. 159 lb-ft)
