Steering Column Squeaks When Turning

SYMPTOM

A squeak from the steering column when the steering wheel is turned left or right.

PROBABLE CAUSE

An insufficient amount of grease on the turn signal cancel cam.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Apply Dielectric Silicone Grease (see PARTS INFORMATION) to the turn signal cancel cam using the following procedure.

Before You Begin:

^ Review the General Precautions about the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) in Section 23 of the service manual.

^ Write down the customer's radio station presets. The radio memory will be erased when you disconnect the battery if the radio has a coded theft protection circuit, be sure you have the anti-theft code before you disconnect the battery.

1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery; then disconnect the positive cable.

2. Remove the airbag module, the steering wheel, and the cable reel as described in Section 23 of the service manual.

To aid in reinstallation, be sure the front wheels and the steering wheel are in the straight-ahead position.





3. Remove the turn signal cancel cam, and lubricate the area that comes in contact with the combination switch with grease (see PARTS INFORMATION).

4. Reinstall all removed parts. Refer to Section 23 of the service manual during reinstallation of the cable reel and the airbag.

5. Connect the positive cable to the battery: then connect the negative cable.

6. Enter the customer's radio anti-theft code, if necessary, and reset the radio stations.

7. Reset the clock.
