Transmission
1. Obtain five-digit radio theft protection code, as outlined under Technician Safety Information, before disconnecting battery.
2. Disconnect both battery cables from battery, then remove set plate or hold-down stay and battery.
3. Drain transaxle fluid and reinstall plug with new washer, then remove air intake duct assembly.
4. Disconnect ground cable from transaxle and body, then remove battery base and ground cable.
5. Remove battery base stay, then disconnect lock-up control and shift control solenoid connectors.
6. Disconnect throttle control cable from lever, then mainshaft speed sensor connector.
7. Remove cooler hoses at joint pipes and plug, then starter motor cable.
8. Disconnect countershaft speed sensor connector.
9. Remove A/T gear position switch connector.
10. Remove speedometer sensor. Do not disconnect power steering hoses from sensor.
11. Remove transaxle housing mounting bolts, then loosen front engine mount bracket bolts.
12. Remove splash shield, then center beam.
13. Separate ball joints from lower arms.
14. Remove driveshafts, cover ends and coat precision finished surfaces with clean engine oil.
15. Remove right strut fork bolt, then separate fork from strut.
16. Remove right radius rod.
17. Turn right drive shaft toward front of vehicle and remove intermediate shaft.
18. Remove torque converter and control cable covers
19. Remove lock bolt securing control lever, then control cable and lever.
20. Remove eight driveplate bolts while rotating crankshaft pulley, then place jack under transaxle.
21. Raise transaxle just enough to take weight off mount.
22. Remove transaxle mount.
23. Remove intake manifold bracket, then transaxle housing and rear engine mounting bolts.
24. Remove transaxle from vehicle.
25. Flush ATF cooler.
26. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Torque housing mounting bolts and transaxle mount bolt to 47 ft. lbs.; rear engine mounting bolts to 40 ft. lbs.; front engine mounting bolts and transaxle mount nuts to 28 ft. lbs.; and intake manifold bracket bolts to 16 ft. lbs.
b. Rotate crankshaft and torque 8 drive plate bolts to 4.5 ft. lbs., then torque bolts to 9 ft. lbs. in crisscross pattern. Ensure crankshaft rotates freely after tightening last bolt.
c. Torque radius rod bolts to 76 ft. lbs.; strut fork nut and castle nut to 36-43 ft. lbs.; radius rod nut and strut pinch bolts to 32 ft. lbs.; intermediate shaft bolts to 28 ft. lbs.; shift cable cover bolts to 13 ft. lbs.; shift cable bolt to 10 ft. lbs.; and torque converter cover bolts to 9 ft. lbs.
d. Ensure drive shaft set rings engage side gears and starter cable ring terminal crimped side faces out.
e. Torque center beam bolts to 37 ft. lbs.; rear beam stiffener and front engine mount bolts to 28 ft. lbs.; and speed sensor bolt, splash shield and starter cable bolts to 9 ft. lbs.
27. On models equipped with radio coded theft protection system, refer to Vehicle Damage Warnings for system disarming and arming procedures. On models equipped with airbag system, refer to Technician Safety Information for system disarming and arming procedures.
