Ignition Timing: Adjustments

CAUTION: All Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Wire Harnesses are covered with yellow insulation. Before you disconnect any part of an SRS wire harness, connect the short connectors.

WARNING: Whenever the Ignition Switch is "ON", or has been turned "OFF" for less than three minutes, be careful not to bump the SRS unit; the Airbags could accidentally deploy and cause damage or injuries. For additional precautions, refer to Airbag Arming/Disarming.

1. Start the Engine. Hold the Engine at 3,000 rpm with no load (Automatic Transmission (A/T) in / N / or / P / position, Manual Transmission (M/T) in neutral) until the Radiator Fan comes on, then let it idle.

2. Pull out the Service Check Connector located behind the Glove Box. Connect the GRN/BLU and RED Terminals with the SCS Service Connector.
3. Check the idle speed.

4. Connect a Timing Light to the No. 1 Ignition Wire. Point the light toward the Pointer on the Timing Belt Cover.

5. Adjust Ignition Timing, if necessary, to the following specifications:

Ignition Timing: 15° ± 2° BTDC (at RED MARK)

NOTE:
- RPM at 700 ± 50 rpm
- Shift Lever in neutral position
- Electrical systems turned off.

6. If it is necessary to adjust Ignition Timing, loosen the Distributor mounting Bolts, and turn the Distributor Ignition Housing counterclockwise to advance the Timing, or clockwise to retard the Timing.
7. Tighten the Mounting Bolts, and recheck the Timing.
8. Remove the Jumper Wire or SCS Service Connector from the Service Check Connector (2-P), and reinstall the rubber plug in the inspection window.
