Dash Board Removal and Installation

DASHBOARD REPLACEMENT PRECAUTIONS
SRS wire harnesses are routed near the dashboard and steering column.

CAUTION:
- All SRS wire harnesses are covered with yellow insulation. Before you disconnect any part of an SRS wire harness, disconnect the airbag connectors.
- Whenever the ignition switch ON (II), or has been turned OFF for less than three minutes, be careful not to bump the SRS unit; the airbags could accidentally deploy and cause damage or injuries.

BEFORE REMOVING THE DASHBOARD:

WARNING: To avoid accidental deployment and possible injury, always disconnect the driver's and front passenger's airbag connectors before working near any SRS wiring.

1. Disconnect the battery negative cable, then disconnect the positive cable.

NOTE: The original radio has a coded theft protection circuit. Be sure to get the customer's code number before:
- disconnecting the battery.
- removing the No. 39 (7.5 A) fuse from the under-hood fuse/relay box.
- removing the radio.
After service, reconnect power to the radio and turn it on. When the word "CODE" is displayed, enter the customer's 5-digit code to restore radio operation.

2. Install the short connectors (RED).

Driver's:
Remove the access panel, then disconnect the connector between the cable reel and driver's airbag.

Front passenger's:
Remove the glove box, then disconnect the connector between the front passenger's airbag and SRS main harness.

DASHBOARD REPLACEMENT
1. To remove the dashboard, first remove the:
- Front and rear consoles
- Dashboard lower cover
- Knee bolster
- Glove box

2. Lower the steering column.

WARNING: To avoid accidental deployment and possible injury, always disconnect the driver's airbag connector before lowering the steering column.

NOTE: To prevent damage to the steering column, wrap it with a shop towel.

3. Disconnect the dashboard wire harness connectors. Detach the harness clips.
4. Disconnect the air mix control cable.

5. Disconnect the recirculation control motor connector and resistor connector.
6. Remove the side defogger trim on each side.

7. Remove the bolts.

CAUTION: Use protective tape on the bottom of the front pillar trim.

- To prevent damage to the shift lever and A/T gear position indicator panel, wrap them with a shop towel.

8. Remove the front passenger's airbag. Lift and remove the dashboard.

WARNING: To avoid accidental deployment and possible injury, always disconnect the front passenger's airbag connector when the SRS main harness is disconnected.

9. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

NOTE:
- Make sure the dashboard fits onto the guide pin correctly.
- Before tightening the bolts, make sure the dashboard wire harnesses are not pinched, and that the dashboard is not interfering with the air mix control cable.
