MIL ON - Misfire Codes

MIL Is On With Misfire DTCs P0301, P0302, P0303, or P0304
(Supersedes 99-011, dated May 4, 1999)
SYMPTOM
The MIL is on with one or more misfire DTCs (P0301, P0302, P0303, or P0304) stored in the ECM/PCM, and the customer has no driveability complaints.
PROBABLE CAUSE
The ECM/PCM is detecting a false misfire during cold starts.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Review the DTC Freeze Data, and if the Freeze Data matches the conditions outlined in the INSPECTION, replace the ECM/PCM.

Refer to Service Bulletin 98-081, Emissions Warranty Extension, for warranty coverage.
INSPECTION
1. Use the PGM Tester to retrieve the DTCs.
2. Review the Engine RPM and VSS values of the Freeze Data.
Is the Engine RPM above 1,100, and is the VSS zero?
YES - Go to step 3.
NO - Disregard this Service Bulletin, and follow normal troubleshooting procedures. [ ]
3. Review the ECT and IAT values.
Are the ECT and IAT values within 0.5 V of each other?
YES - Go to step 4.
NO - Disregard this Service Bulletin, and follow normal troubleshooting procedures. [ ]
*4. Remove the right kick panel. For the del Sol, first remove the right door sill molding.*
5. Find the part number on the current ECM/PCM, and write it down.
6. Locate the pan number of the current ECM/PCM under PARTS INFORMATION then order the appropriate replacement ECM/PCM.
7. Inform the customer that he or she will be contacted to schedule an appointment when the replacement ECM/PCM arrives at your dealership.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Write down the radio station presets.
2. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
*3. Remove the right kick panel. For the del Sol, first remove the right door sill molding.*
4. If the vehicle is equipped with ABS, remove the ABS control unit.
5. Remove the current ECM/PCM, and replace it with the appropriate ECM/PCM listed under PARTS INFORMATION.
6. If necessary, reinstall the ABS control unit.
*7. Reinstall the right kick panel. On the del Sol, reinstall the right door sill molding.*
8. Reconnect the negative cable to the battery.
9. Reset the clock.
10. Enter the radio station presets.
