Windshield - Creaking Noise

Creaking Noise From the Top of the Windshield During Cold Weather

SYMPTOM
During cold weather, a creaking and/or ticking noise is heard from the top of the windshield near the sun visors.

PROBABLE CAUSE
The headliner is rubbing against the windshield.

CORRECTIVE ACTION
Install rubber spacers on the roof flange, and apply wool felt to the headliner if needed.

(one roll will repair 20 vehicles)

Out of warranty: Any repair performed after warranty expiration may be eligible for goodwill consideration by the District Service Manager or your Zone Office. You must request consideration, and get a decision, before starting work.

DIAGNOSIS

NOTE: Do not turn on the heater during diagnosis. Heat in the passenger cabin will affect the accuracy of the diagnosis.

Test-drive the vehicle on uneven road surfaces. If you hear a creaking or ticking noise from the top of the windshield, press on the headliner. If the noise goes away, go to REPAIR PROCEDURE. Otherwise continue with normal troubleshooting procedures.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Remove both sun visors and their holders. Refer to page 20-64 of the 1996-99 Civic Service Manual.

2. Remove the rearview mirror. Refer to page 20-25 of the 1996-99 Civic Service Manual.

3. If the vehicle has spotlights, remove them. Refer to page 23-184 of the 1996-99 Civic Service Manual.

4. Remove both A-pillar trim pieces.

5. If the vehicle has a moonroof, remove the moonroof trim.

6. If the vehicle has a passenger's grab handle, remove it.

7. Gently pull the front of the headliner down.





8. Install the rubber spacer blocks on the roof flange directly in front of the sun visor mounting holes.

9. Reinstall the sun visors and the holders.





10. Slide a credit card between the windshield and the headliner.

^ If you feel a slight drag, continue to step 11.

^ It you feel no resistance, remove the sun visors and holders. Lower the headliner, and use a utility knife to trim 2 mm off the bottom of each rubber spacer block. Apply two 10 mm x 200 mm pieces of wool felt to the headliner as shown.

11. Reinstall all the remaining parts.
