Repair Procedure

1. Write down the customer's radio station presets.

2. Disconnect the cable from the battery negative terminal.





3. Lift the driver's door sill molding to release the clips, then remove the door sill molding.

4. Remove the left kick panel.





5. Remove the driver's side lower dashboard panel.





6. Remove the five mounting screws from the instrument panel.

7. Pull out on the instrument panel to release the clips, and remove the panel. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the switches.

8. If any mounting clips remained in the dashboard, remove them and install them in the instrument panel. Set the instrument panel aside.





9. Apply lithium dielectric grease to the metal contacts in the wire splice. Attach one half of the wire splice to the white/blue wire on the timer kit harness.





10. Connect the two electrical connectors on the white/blue wire end of the timer kit harness to the timer/relay assembly from the kit.





11. Remove the upper right fuse box mounting screw. Remove the clip nut behind the fuse box. Discard the screw and the clip nut.





12. Mount the timer/relay assembly to the dashboard bulkhead with the bolt, nut, and spacer from the kit.

13. Tilt the steering wheel down as far as it will go.





14. Place a clean shop towel on top of the dashboard. Remove the gauge panel assembly (4 screws). Set the gauge panel assembly on top of the towel. Do not disconnect any of the wire harnesses. Tilt the steering wheel up to support the gauge panel assembly.





15. Route the timer kit harness across the dashboard, and out through the same hole as the harness/connector for the rear window defogger switch. Route the timer kit harness along the main harness. Leave a large loop at the timer/relay end of the harness.

16. Cut two 50 mm by 80 mm pieces of EPT Sealer 3T





17. Wrap the pieces of EPT around the timer kit harness. Position the pieces 30 mm on each side of the meter cluster harness.





18. Push the timer kit harness behind the main harness and the gauge panel harness.

19. Tilt the steering wheel down, then reinstall the gauge panel in the instrument panel.





20. Locate the white/blue wire connected to the rear defogger relay.

21. Splice the timer kit harness white/blue wire to the defogger relay white/blue wire.





22. Connect one timer kit harness gray connector to the green connector for the rear defogger switch.

23. Cut a 70 mm by 100 mm piece of EPT Sealer 3T

24. Wrap the piece of EPT around the connection made in step 22.

25. Remove the original rear defogger switch from the instrument panel, then install the new switch from the kit.





26. Connect the remaining timer kit harness connector to the rear defogger switch. Reconnect the other switches, then reinstall the instrument panel.

27. Pull back the door seal along the lower part of the A-pillar, then reinstall the lower dashboard panel and the hood release handle.

28. Reinstall the door seal the kick panel, and the door sill molding.





29. Use a wrench to remove the tension from the serpentine belt. Remove the belt from the alternator pulley, then release the tensioner.

30. Remove the tie wrap holding the alternator wiring.

31. Remove the lower radiator hose support bolt.

32. Remove the two alternator mounting bolts. Remove the alternator.

33. Disconnect the harness connector from the back of the alternator. Disconnect the wire from the B terminal (plastic cap, nut, and lock washer).

34. Connect the wire to the B terminal on the new alternator. Reconnect the harness connector to the back of the alternator.

35. Install the alternator with the original bolts. Torque the 10 mm bolt to 41 N.m (30 lb-ft). Torque the 8 mm bolt to 21 N.m (15 lb-ft).

36. Reinstall the tie wrap and the lower radiator hose support bolt.

37. Reinstall the serpentine belt.

38. Reconnect the cable to the battery negative terminal.

39. Enter the customer's radio station presets. Reset the clock.

40. Apply the owner's manual page sticker, describing the new operation of the rear window defogger, to page 71 of the customer's owner's manual.





41. Fill out the information on a campaign completion label. Affix this label to the driver's doorjamb above the manufacturer's identification label.
