Safety Recall: Civic Air Cleaner Housing
BACKGROUND
During the assembly process, the plastic cover for the air cleaner assembly may have been damaged. If a broken plastic piece becomes loose inside the intake chamber and lodges in the throttle body, it could result in a partially open throttle condition, and a crash could occur.
CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION
All owners of affected vehicles will be mailed a notification of this recall.
Some vehicles affected by this recall are still in dealer inventory. According to Federal law, those vehicles cannot be sold or leased until they are repaired.
NOTE:
Not all of the vehicles in the listed VIN range are affected by this campaign. Before beginning work, verify that the vehicle is eligible by checking at least one of the following.
^ The customer has a notification letter.
^ The vehicle is shown on your campaign responsibility report.
^ The vehicle is shown as eligible on a VIN Status Inquiry on DCS.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Inspect the air cleaner housing cover for a cracked or broken brace. If necessary, replace the air cleaner housing cover.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Remove the air cleaner housing cover (7 bolts).
2. Inspect the plastic brace between the case and the crossbar. Try to flex it back and forth, and look for any cracks or missing pieces.
^ If the brace is not damaged, reinstall the air cleaner housing cover, then go to step 14.
^ If the brace is cracked or broken, but you find all of the missing pieces in the air cleaner housing, remove the pieces and install a new cover. Then go to step 14.
^ If the brace is broken and you cannot locate all of the missing pieces, go to step 3.
3. Remove the air cleaner housing and the resonator.
4. Remove the oil filter.
5. Remove the throttle body and intake manifold as a unit. Refer to page 9-2 of the 2001-02 Civic Service Manual.
6. Shake the intake manifold and listen for plastic pieces rattling in the runners. Remove any pieces.
7. Inspect the intake ports in the cylinder head. Clean them out, if necessary, then go to step 8 (there is no need to inspect further).
8. Reinstall the intake manifold with new 0-rings.
9. Install a new oil filter.
10. Reinstall the resonator and air cleaner housing.
11. Install the new air cleaner housing cover.
12. Check the coolant level in the radiator. Refill with Honda Coolant Type 2, and bleed the system.
13. Run the engine, then check the oil level. Refill as necessary.
14. Center-punch a completion mark above the first character of the engine compartment VIN.
