P1279 - VTEC SYSTEM MALFUNCTION

If you're troubleshooting a 1998-2003 Accord or 1997-2001 Prelude with the PGM Tester, and you read a DTC P1279 (switch/solenoid circuit problem) on the display, ignore it, troubleshoot for DTC P1259 (VTEC malfunction) instead. DTC P1279 is bogus and the result of a software bug. You won't find it listed in the service manuals for these vehicles.

Here's a handy tip: if you run across a funky looking DTC that's not listed in the service manual, just select GENERIC OBD-II MODE, and you'll see what the correct DTC is.
