Weak Tailgate Support Struts

PROBLEM

The struts cannot support the tailgate in the up position.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Remove and inspect both tailgate support struts. Replace any that leak oil or that you can compress by hand.

Any repair performed after warranty expiration may be eligible for goodwill consideration by the District Parts and Service Manager or your Zone Office. You must request consideration, and get a decision, before starting work.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Open the tailgate to the fully open position. If it does not stay up by itself, go to step 2.

2. Have an assistant support the tailgate.

3. Pry the clips off each end of one of the support struts with a flat-tip screwdriver.





4. Remove the strut from the pivot bolts.





5. Inspect the strut. If there are signs of oil leakage or you can compress the strut by hand, replace it.

6. Repeat steps 2 thru 5 for the other strut.

7. Close the tailgate, and check operation by opening, raising, and closing it several times.
