DIAGNOSIS
1. Test-drive the vehicle under the same conditions your customer heard the creak or click.
NOTE:
The noise can be intermittent, and it's usually heard when the outside temperature is below 60° F.
^ If you hear a creak or click, note which side it's coming from, then go to step 2.
^ If you don't hear a creak or click, disregard this bulletin and continue with normal troubleshooting procedures.
2. On the side you heard the noise, stick a piece of cardboard (at least 0.4 mm thick) between the roof molding rubber trim and the lower corner of the windshield.
3. Continue with your test-drive.
^ If the noise is gone, go to REPAIR PROCEDURE.
^ If you still hear the noise, choose the appropriate option:
- On V6 models, refer to S/B 04-056, Creaking or Popping From Driver's A-Pillar.
- On 2-door models, refer to S/B 04-055, Ticking, Popping, or Creaking From Driver's A-Pillar.
- On all other models, continue with normal troubleshooting procedures.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Make sure the roof molding clips at the lower corner of the windshield are fully engaged by gently rotating the molding edge up and down while pulling inward across the glass.
^ If there is only a little movement in the molding, the clips are fully engaged. Go to step 3.
^ If you can turn up the molding or move it inward, one or more of the clips are broken or are not engaged. Go to step 2.
2. Press down on the molding to engage the clips.
^ If the clips engage, go to step 3.
^ If the clips do not engage, remove the roof molding, replace the broken clips, then go to step 3.
3. Clean the area between the roof molding rubber trim and the windshield:
^ Squirt some 3M General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner on the corner of a clean shop towel.
^ Wrap the corner of the towel over the end of the KTC trim tool.
^ Carefully lift the bottom of the molding rubber trim 1/8th inch (3-4 mm), insert the trim tool between the rubber and the windshield, then slide the trim tool up about 8 inches (200 mm).
^ Wrap another area of the towel over the end of the trim tool, and slide the tool under the rubber trim again to remove any residual cleaner.
4. Cut off the tip of the silicone sealant nozzle at a 45 degree angle, then screw the nozzle onto the silicone tube.
5. Apply an 8-inch (200 mm) piece of 1-inch-wide masking tape to the lower corner of the windshield, along the roof molding rubber trim.
6. At the top of the tape, insert the trim tool under the rubber trim, and then insert the sealant nozzle above the trim tool. Carefully squeeze out a small amount of sealant as you move the tool and nozzle down to the bottom of the windshield.
7. Smooth over the rubber trim with your finger, then remove any excess sealant from the roof molding with a shop towel and the cleaner.
8. Reposition the tape over the trim you just sealed, and leave it on for 25 minutes.
9. Carefully remove the tape, then remove any excess sealant with the cleaner.
10. Clean the windshield with glass cleaner.
