Tailgate Position Adjustment

Tailgate

Adjustment

NOTE: Check for a flush fit with the body, then check for equal gaps between the top, both sides, and bottom tailgate edges and the body. Check that the tailgate and body edges are parallel.

1. Place the vehicle on a firm, level surface when adjusting the tailgate.
2. Remove the tailgate support strut.

3. Adjust at the hinges (A):
- Place a shop towel (B) on the jack (C) to prevent damage to the tailgate when adjusting the tailgate.
- Loosen the tailgate mounting bolts (D) slightly, and move the tailgate in or out until it's flush with the body.
- Remove the right taillight and rear bumper.
- Loosen the hinge mounting bolts (E) slightly, and move the tailgate left or right, up or down as necessary to equalize the gaps.

4. Tighten each bolt securely.

5. Check that the tailgate and body edges are parallel. If necessary, adjust the tailgate cushions (A) to make the left of the tailgate flush with the body.
6. Reinstall the support strut securely.
7. Apply touch-up paint to the hinge mounting bolts and around the hinges.
8. Reinstall all removed parts.

9. Apply multipurpose grease to the location of the tailgate hinges as indicated by the arrows.
10. Check for water leaks.
11. Test-drive and check for wind noise.
