11-043February 7, 2012
Applies To:
2003-05 Civic Hybrid ULEV (KA) - Check the iN VIN status for eligibility
Product Update: ECM Update to Improve DTC P1420 and P2000 Detection Threshold
(Supersedes 11-043, dated August 17, 2011, to revise the information marked by asterisks).
*REVISION SUMMARY
Under WARRANTY CLAIM INFORMATION, the flat rate time was changed.*
BACKGROUND
When the NOx adsorptive catalytic converter is hot, the PGM-FI software can misinterpret the signal from the secondary heated oxygen sensor, and may incorrectly indicate that the catalytic converter is deteriorated. The software update improves the accuracy of the catalyst deterioration detection.
NOTE:
American Honda is also extending the warranty on the secondary and third heated oxygen sensors. For more information, refer to Service Bulletin 11-044 Warranty Extension: Secondary and Third Heated Oxygen Sensors.
CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION
All owners of affected vehicles will be sent a notification of this product update. An example of the customer notification is at the end of this service bulletin.
Do an iN VIN status inquiry to make sure the vehicle is shown as eligible.
In addition, check for a punch mark below the fifth character of the engine compartment VIN. A punch mark in that location means this product update has already been completed.
Some vehicles affected by this campaign may be in your used vehicle inventory. Repair these vehicles before they are sold.
Should a dealership sell an unrepaired vehicle that subsequently causes an injury or damage because of the recalled item, the dealership will be solely responsible to the damaged party, and will be required to defend and indemnify American Honda for any resulting claims. To see if a vehicle in inventory is affected by this campaign, do a VIN status inquiry before selling it.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Update the PGM-FI software.
