Idle Speed: Testing and Inspection
Idle Speed InspectionNOTE:
- Leave the idle air control (IAC) valve connected.
- Before checking the idle speed, check these items:
- The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) has not been reported on.
- Ignition timing
- Spark plugs
- Air cleaner
- PCV system
- On Canadian models, pull the parking brake lever up, start the engine, then check that the headlights are off.
1. Disconnect the evaporative emission (EVAP) canister purge valve 2P connector.
2. Connect a tachometer.
3. Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 3,000 rpm with no load (in neutral) unit the radiator fan comes on, then let it idle.
4. Check the idle speed under no-load conditions: headlights, blower fan, radiator fan, and air conditioner are not operating.
Idle speed should be:
USA model:
M/T: 700 ± 50 rpm
A/T, CVT: 700 ± 50 rpm in park or neutral
Canada Model:
M/T: 720 ± 50 rpm
A/T: 720 ± 50 rpm in park or neutral
5. Idle the engine for 1 minute with the heater fan switch on HI and the air conditioner on, then check the idle speed.
Idle speed should be:
M/T: 720 ± 50 rpm
A/T, CVT: 720 ± 50 rpm in park or neutral
NOTE: If the idle speed is not within specification, refer to the Symptom Troubleshooting Symptom Related Diagnostic Procedures
6. Reconnect the EVAP canister purge valve 2P connector.
