Oil Pump: Service and Repair
Oil Pump OverhaulOil Pump:
Removal
1. Remove the front wheels.
2. Remove the splash shield.
3. Remove the drive belt auto-tensioner.
4. Remove the cylinder head cover.
5. Remove the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) hose.
6. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
7. Support the engine with a jack and a wood block under the oil pan.
8. Remove the bolt (A) securing the A/C line, then remove the upper torque rod (B).
9. Remove the ground cable (A), then remove the side engine mount bracket (B).
10. Remove the oil pump.
Inspection
1. Remove the screws from the pump housing, then separate the housing and cover.
2. Check the inner-to-outer rotor radial clearance between the inner rotor (A) and outer rotor (B). If the inner to-outer rotor clearance exceeds the service limit, replace the oil pump assembly.
3. Check the housing-to-rotor axial clearance between the rotors (A) and pump housing (B). If the housing-to-rotor axial clearance exceeds the service limit, replace the oil pump assembly.
4. Check the housing-to-outer rotor radial clearance between the outer rotor (A) and pump housing (B). If the housing-to-outer rotor radial clearance exceeds the service limit, replace the oil pump assembly.
5. Inspect both rotors and pump housing for scoring or other damage. Replace the parts, if necessary.
6. Apply liquid thread lock to the pump housing screws, then install the oil pump cover.
7. Check that the oil pump turns freely.
Installation
1. Check the oil pump oil seal for damage. If the oil seal is damaged, replace the oil seal.
2. Remove all of the old liquid gasket from the oil pump mating surfaces, bolts, and bolt holes.
3. Clean, and dry the oil pump mating surfaces.
4. Apply liquid gasket, P/N 08717-0004, 08718-0001, 08718-0002, 08718-0003, or 08718-0009, evenly to the engine block mating surface of the oil pump.
5. Apply liquid gasket to the engine block upper surface contact areas (A) on the oil pump, and lower block upper surface contact areas (B) on the oil pump.
6. Apply liquid gasket, P/N 08717-0004, 08718-0001, 08718-0002, 08718-0003, or 08718-0009, evenly to the oil pan mating surface of the oil pump.
NOTE: Do not install components if too much time has passed after applying the liquid gasket (for P/N 08718-0002, no more then 4 minutes, for all others, no more than 5 minutes). Instead, remove the old residue and reapply the liquid gasket.
7. Install the new O-ring (A) on the oil pump. Set the edge of the oil pump (B) to the edge of the oil pan (C), then install the oil pump on the engine block (D). Loosely install the dowel bolts (E), then tighten the 8 mm bolts (F). Tighten the 6 mm bolts (G) and dowel bolts. Wipe off the excess liquid gasket on the oil pan and oil pump mating area.
NOTE:
^ When installing the oil pump, do not slide the bottom surface onto the oil pan mounting surface.
^ Wait at least 30 minutes before filling the engine with oil.
^ Do not run the engine for at least 3 hours after installing the oil pump.
8. Install the side engine mount bracket (A), then loosely tighten the new bolt and nut (B), and loosely tighten the bolt (C).
9. Install the ground cable (D).
10. Remove the air cleaner housing assembly.
11. Loosen the transmission mounting bolt and nuts (A).
12. Raise the hoist to full height.
13. Loosen the lower torque rod mounting bolt (A).
14. Lower the vehicle on the hoist.
15. Tighten the side engine mount mounting bolts and nut.
16. Tighten the transmission mounting bolt and nuts.
17. Raise the hoist to full height.
18. Tighten the lower torque rod mounting bolt.
19. Lower the vehicle on the hoist.
20. Install the air cleaner housing assembly.
21. Install the upper torque rod, then tighten the new upper torque rod mounting bolts in the numbered sequence shown.
22. Install the bolt (B) securing the A/C line.
23. Install the crankshaft pulley.
24. Install the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) hose.
25. Install the cylinder head cover.
26. Install the drive belt auto-tensioner.
27. Install the splash shield.
28. Install the front wheels.
