No Back-Up Circuit for Trailer in Vehicle's Rear Wire Harness (Supersedes 07-022, dated April 4, 2007, to update the information marked with the black bars and asterisks)

SYMPTOM

The trailer back-up circuit doesn't work. (This circuit is commonly used to deactivate the trailer's surge brakes when backing up.)

PROBABLE CAUSE

A back-up circuit was not included in the rear wire harnesses and/or trailer harness of early-production vehicles.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

*Thru VIN 2HJYK...6H535255:

Install a Back-up Circuit Harness Kit (REPAIR PROCEDURE A), and check the Honda trailer harness socket for the back-up circuit YEL wire. (See DIAGNOSIS for information on how to locate the yellow wire.)

^ If the Honda trailer harness socket has a back-up circuit YEL wire, do REPAIR PROCEDURE A only.

^ If the Honda trailer harness socket does not have a back-up circuit YEL wire, install a Back-up Circuit Harness Kit (REPAIR PROCEDURE A) and a Trailer Harness Socket Assembly (REPAIR PROCEDURE B).

Above VIN 2HJYK...6H535255:

^ If the Honda trailer harness socket does not have a back-up circuit YEL wire, install a Trailer Harness Socket Assembly (REPAIR PROCEDURE B) only.

^ If the Honda trailer harness socket has a backup circuit YEL wire, this service bulletin does not apply.*

DIAGNOSIS

*1. Check if the vehicle is equipped with a Honda trailer hitch and harness.

2. Disconnect connector C629 (10P).*

*3. Check if the YEL wire is present in cavity 6 of the trailer harness socket connector.

* Thru VIN 2HJYK...6H535255:

Above VIN 2HJYK. 6H535255:

^ If the Honda trailer harness socket does not have a back-up circuit YEL wire, install a Trailer Harness Socket Assembly (REPAIR PROCEDURE B) only.

^ If the Honda trailer harness socket has a back-up circuit YEL wire, this service bulletin does not apply.*

REPAIR PROCEDURE A

*1. Make sure you have the anti-theft codes for the audio unit (and navigation code, if equipped), then write down the audio presets.

2. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery first, then disconnect the positive cable.*

3. Remove the left side bed panel:

^ Refer to page 20-162 of the 2006-2008 Ridgeline Service Manua4 or

^ Online, enter keyword PANEL, and select Side Bed Panel Removal/Installation from the list.

4. Remove the left taillight assembly:

^ Refer to page 22-178 of the service manual, or

^ Online, enter keywords EXTERIOR LIGHT, and select Taillight Replacement from the list.

5. Locate the lop trailer harness socket connector (C629) clipped to the rear bed floor crossmember.

6. Remove connector C629 from the frame, and disconnect it. Using needle-nose pliers, remove the retainer from the vehicle side of the connector housing.

7. Remove the GRN wire terminal from cavity 9 of connector C629 (vehicle side).

8. Locate the trailer socket junction connector in the Back-up Circuit Harness Kit. (It's the larger of the two 8P connectors, and it has a clip, not a wire tie.) Route the trailer socket junction connector along with the GRN wire terminal you removed in step 7, down the left side of the bed, and up to the trailer side of socket connector C629.

9. Insert the GRN wire terminal into any of the empty cavities of the large trailer socket junction connector (remove the cavity plug first).

*10. Remove the GRN wire terminal from the back-up circuit harness, and insert it into cavity 9 of connector C629 (vehicle side).*

11. Insert the BLU wire terminal into cavity 6 of connector C629 (vehicle side).

12. Reinstall the retainer into connector C629 (vehicle side).

13. Route the small 8P taillight junction connector from the kit onto the rear back-up circuit harness and into the left taillight cavity.

14. Remove the white retainer from the left taillight connector, then remove the GRN wire terminal from cavity 1 of the connector.

15. Insert the GRN wire terminal you removed in step 14 into any empty cavity of the 8P taillight junction connector.

16. Insert the other end of the GRN wire terminal from step 10 into cavity 1 of the left taillight connector. Reinsert the white retainer removed in step 14.

17. Insert the new back-up circuit harness into the body side cavity, connect the taillight connector, then reinstall the taillight assembly.

18. Using the spring nut from the kit, locate and mark the location to drill. Drill a 7 mm hole into the side bed panel as shown. (See step 19 for the finished view.) Apply touch-up paint to the edges of the hole.

019. Using the hole you drilled in step 18, attach the new back-up circuit relay to the side bed panel with the spring nut and bolt from the kit.

20. Secure the taillight junction connector to the vehicle harness with a wire tie.

21. Attach the back-up circuit harness ground terminal to the vehicle ground bolt on the left side of the bed as shown.

22. Drill a 7 mm hole into the rear floor crossmember in the area highlighted in yellow. Apply touch-up paint to the edges of the hole.

23. Press the clip on the trailer socket junction connector into the hole you drilled in step 22.

24. Secure the back-up circuit harness with wire ties as shown.

25. Reconnect connector C629 to the trailer harness socket.

REPAIR PROCEDURE B

1. Make sure you have the anti-thefi codes for the audio unit (and navigation code, if equipped), then write down the audio presets.

2. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery first, then disconnect the positive cable.

3. Remove the original trailer connector 7P and 4P sockets.

4. Install the new trailer connector 7P socket to the socket bracket with two 6 x 16 mm flange bolts.

5. Remove the cover from the new 4P socket, and install the socket to the socket bracket with two 6 x 35 mm flange bolts and two 6 mm flange nuts. Reattach the cover to the socket.

6. Route the 7P harness socket through the opening in the trailer hitch, and attach the socket bracket to the trailer hitch with two 6 x 16 mm flange bolts.

7. Connect the lop socket connector to lop trailer socket connector C629.

8. Attach the connector clip to lop trailer socket connector C629, then push the connector clip and the socket harness clip into the holes in the body panel.
