Transmission Removal

Special Tools Required
^ Engine support hanger, A & Reds AAR-T-12566*
^ Engine hanger/adapter VSB02C000015*
^ Front subframe adapter VSB02C000016*
*These special tools are available through the Honda Tool and Equipment Program 1-888-424-6857.

NOTE: Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.

1. Make sure you have the anti-theft code for the audio unit.
2. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery, then disconnect the positive cable.
3. Remove the battery.
4. Secure the hood in its vertical position (A).





5. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
6. Remove the air intake duct.
7. Remove the battery base (A).





8. Remove the ground cable (A).





9. Disconnect the output shaft (countershaft) speed sensor connector (B) and back-up light switch connector (C).
10. Remove the cable bracket (A), then disconnect the shift cables (B) from the top of the transmission housing. Carefully remove both cables and the bracket together to avoid bending the cables.





11. Carefully remove the slave cylinder (A) to avoid bending the clutch line (B).

NOTE: Do not press the clutch pedal after the slave cylinder has been removed.





12. Remove the two upper transmission mounting bolts (A).





13. Remove the purge joint pipe (A),then attach the engine hanger/adapter (A) to the threaded hole in the cylinder head.





14. Install the engine support hanger (A) to the vehicle, then attach the hook to the engine hanger/adapter (B). Tighten the wingnut (C) by hand to lift and support the engine.





15. Remove the transmission mount bracket (A) and transmission mounting bolt (B).





16. Raise the vehicle on the hoist, and make sure it is securely supported.
17. Remove the splash shield (A).





18. Drain the transmission fluid. Install the drain plug with a new washer.
19. Remove the front driveshafts. Coat all precision finished surfaces with new engine oil, then tie a plastic bags over the driveshaft ends.
20. Remove the intermediate shaft. Coat all precision finished surfaces with new engine oil, then tie a plastic bag over the intermediate shaft.
21. 4WD model: Remove the propeller shaft.
22. Remove the bolt (A) from the front engine mount bracket (B).





23. Remove the three bolts securing the rear transmission mount.





24. Support the front subframe (A) with the front subframe adapter (B) and a jack (C).





25. Make reference marks (A) on the front subframe (B) and mounting bolts (C), then remove the front subframe.





26. Remove the clutch cover (A).





27. Remove the front engine mount (A).





28. Support the transmission (A) with a transmission jack (B), and remove the four lower transmission mounting bolts (C).





29. Pull the transmission away from the engine until the transmission mainshaft clears the clutch pressure plate.
30. Slowly lower the transmission about 150 mm (6 in.). Check once again that all hoses and electrical wiring are disconnected and free from the transmission, then lower it all the way.
31. Remove the rear transmission mount (A) and the rear transmission mount bracket (B).








32. Remove the release fork boot (A) from the clutch housing (B).





33. Remove the release fork (C) from the clutch housing by squeezing the release fork set spring (D) with pliers. Remove the release bearing (E).
